A DIPA champion is crowned monthly and at the end of each year to recognize outstanding taste quality in selected double IPA beers (DIPAs).
The entries for each DIPA beer championship, similar to the national beer championship held annually, are chosen from the MY4PAX ratings’ categories, “Must Try Before You Die” and “Try It, You’ll Like It”.
The DIPA champion winners of the monthly/annual beer championship exhibit all of the taste qualities that the MY4PAX look for in a great double IPA brew: Smell/Aroma; Sight/Appearance; Taste (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, deliciousness) or Mouthfeel; and Pleasure.
Pleasure is the most important quality when evaluating beer because that is what we are left with the next day; or, put another way, the overall impression the 4PAX take away each time a DIPA is evaluated.
The MY4PAX typically sample from four to six DIPAs per month, and more if we happen to take a field trip somewhere to one of the many local craft breweries in the area. To date, we have sampled and graded three hundred plus DIPAs. As we so often mention, “so many DIPAs so little time”.
DIPAs are a full-sized, brash beer with nothing to hide. The 4PAX believe double IPA drinkers know more about what they drink than non-DIPA drinkers. The 4PAX also believe that double IPA drinkers are health-conscious, choosing higher-quality beverages.
DIPA drinkers know when they find what they’re looking for and have favorites, but that doesn’t stop them from continuing to explore offerings. While some are seeking the uncommon and mysterious, DIPA drinkers have enough of the tavern-tracker in them to offset the snobbishness of drinking a “better” beer.
