IPA BEER RATINGS | 4PAX

The Primary goal of the MY4PAX website is to share our taste experiences with all of the real Double IPA (DIPA) lovers out there, who rely on regular IPA beer ratings of top rated beers to find the best tasting, double IPA beer(s) on the market today.

The posts included in this website are meant to provide such updates – MY4PAX does the work, so that you can ‘belly-up’ and enjoy the ‘brews’ of our labor.

STATISTICAL TASTE ANALYSIS

A central topic of discussion in this website is the examination of those  DIPA taste qualities that produce the best tasting double IPA beers in America today.

Characterizing the DIPA beer ‘Tasteability’ associated with the top rated DIPAs is a special feature unique to this website.  Double IPA beer graded results are input to the MY4PAX Bayes processor to determine the Characteristic set of graded taste parameters that best describes each of the MY4PAX ‘Tasteability’ categories.

Starting with the prior probability of a given taste event ( P( TCAT ) ) in the absence of any apriori data, times the likelihood of a particular taste set, the product is proportional to the inverse probability of the taste event given discriminating data; i.e., the Bayes processor acts as a filter to extract that combination of graded taste parameters that maximizes the likelihood of a particular taste category (TCAT).  The set of graded taste parameters that maximizes the Bayes likelihood Characterizes the ‘Tasteability’ of the given TCAT.

The maximum Bayes probabilities for TCATs A, B, and C are 0.94, 0.32, and 0.77, respectively.  The associated graded taste sets are:  [ 4-5, 3-4, 4-5, 4-5 ], [ 3-4, 3-4, 4-5, 4-5 ], and [ 3-4, 3-4, 3-4, 3-4 ], respectively.

For the case of TCAT A, for example, this means there is a 93% probability that the graded taste set – [ 4-5, 3-4, 4-5, 4-5 ] – characterizes the ‘Tasteability’ category, “You Must Try Before You Die”.

OVERVIEW

There are several cornerstone topics that are discussed in this website.  They include:  grading and rating DIPA beer samples; categorizing the rated samplescharacterizing the ‘Tasteability’ of the individual DIPAs; and recognizing the top rated beers.

TOP TEN REVIEW

Psychologists have discovered a “top-10 effect,” where people lump things into round-number groups and view everything else as inferior. The lesson? Never, ever be 11th. Nearly everyone loves reading top-10 lists. Whether it’s listing the world’s most beautiful women or richest people, important issues you need to know about a new cell phone, or even kittens that look like Madonna, a top-10 list is a winning format.  For fun, the following link provides top-10 lists of just about everything under the sun. http://listverse.com/

BACKGROUND

MY4PAX is a group of five retired guys, four Double IPA (DIPA) Lovers and their Designated Driver, who enjoy drinking and rating top rated beers, especially new and dynamic Double or Imperial IPAs.

Initially our research included all IPAs; but after experiencing the wonderful world of Doubles and Imperials, we now limit our consumption exclusively to DIPAs (any IPA above 7.0% ABV).

Focusing our attention on only the hoppiest of the top rated beers, and restricting our grading assignments to just the four of us, helps reduce inter-sampler variance resulting from an over-abundance of samplers with diverse palates – we call this the MY4PAX ADVANTAGE.

Please explore the information-based website, MY4PAX, along with other established beer websites such as BeerAdvocate and Untappd, to enhance your appreciation for top rated beers, especially the  highest rated double IPA beers.  Namaste

TASTEABILITY

Top rated beers, especially the highest rated double IPA beers, are rated and judged monthly and annually to recognize outstanding taste quality, i.e. ‘Tasteability’, in double IPA beers (DIPAs).

When grading and rating the best double IPA beers, MY4PAX looks for those taste qualities that produce a great double IPA brew –  Smell/Aroma; Sight/Appearance; Taste (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, deliciousness) or Mouthfeel; and Pleasure.

Pleasure, or ‘Tasteability’, is the most important quality when evaluating top rated beers because that is what we are left with the next day; or, put another way, the overall impression MY4PAX takes away each time a DIPA is sampled.

‘Tasteability’ ranking categories of the top rated beers:

METHODOLOGY

The 4PAX double IPA (DIPA) rating method consists of computing a weighted average of four graded taste parameters across sampler, based on the criteria presented in the link, DIPA Taste Parameters The taste parameters that the MY4PAX deem most important in crafting a superior tasting DIPA are weighted the heaviest.

The complete set of scored parameters constitute a rating’s distribution function ranging in value from 0 to 5.  This distribution can be viewed in the form of a Histogram, which is used to produce a Cumulative Distribution Function ( CDF ).

The value of the individual sample ratings relative to established CDF rating thresholds determines the ‘Tasteability’ of the individual DIPA samples (as rated by MY4PAX) and, ultimately, the best double IPA beers in our data base.

Methodology used to rate and characterize top rated beers:

  • DIPA Rating Method ( consists of computing a weighted average of four graded taste parameters across sampler. )
  • DIPA Taste Parameters ( discusses appearance, aroma, mouthfeel, and flavor. )
  • DIPA Characterization ( determines the joint set of graded taste parameters that maximizes the “Tasteability” for each of the four ‘Tasteability’ categories. )
